Every year, a million wildebeest display an ancient pattern of behavior that involves a frenzied three-week period of territorial conquests and mating. After this, they embark on a perilous 1,000 km journey northward through crocodile-infested waters. This pilgrimage is essential for the survival of their species as it results in the birth of over 8,000 calves daily, causing a population explosion. This process repeats itself every year.
Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous parks in Africa, known for its vast concentration of wildlife and the annual migration of millions of wildebeest.
It is the subject of some of the most impressive nature documentaries due to its unique ecosystem and breathtaking landscapes. The name ‘Serengeti’ is derived from the Maasai language, meaning ‘endless plains,’ which accurately describes the park’s expansive grasslands, dotted with acacia trees and rocky outcrops.Serengeti National Park is the second-largest park in Tanzania, covering an area of almost 15,000 km² (6,000 sq miles). It is home to over 70 species of large mammals, including the famous ‘Big Five’ – lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos. The park also provides refuge to many other species, such as cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and various antelopes.
The diverse birdlife of the park is equally impressive, with over 500 species recorded. One of Serengeti’s most remarkable sights is the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest. Migration is a natural phenomenon as the animals move from one area to another in search of water and fresh pastures. It is a dangerous journey for the wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, who must navigate treacherous river crossings and avoid predators such as lions, hyenas, and crocodiles. The Mega-herds on the move stretch up to 40 km in length and cover a distance of some 1,000 kilometers. The Great Migration is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and highlights many visitors’ journeys.
